DYOR Clinic
When Deah, his wife Yusor, and his sister-in-law, Razan, were murdered on February 10th, 2015 in a hate crime, a dental refugee project he was raising funds for, received funds from around the world and this helped support a trip to Turkey to provide dental care to Syrian refugees.
Because of Deah’s vision, we were able to lead teams of dental professionals on delegations to Turkey for three consecutive years from 2015-2017. We set up a makeshift clinic outside the Syrian border in Turkey to provide support for orphans and war-torn families who bussed in daily for treatment. After each trip, we donated our supplies to put them to use in clinics located throughout Syria.
After our third successful trip, we redirected our humanitarian efforts towards founding a local and more sustainable project. To honor Deah and Yusor’s memory, in partnership with University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry, we established a clinic for refugees and low-income families in Raleigh, North Carolina called DYOR Clinic; a name coined as a tribute to the trending social media hashtag that was used for Deah and Yusor’s wedding celebration.
DYOR clinic not only provides refugees and low-income families with emergency oral healthcare, but it also gives students a chance to work with those in need, to help build relationships and to foster inclusive and diverse communities through service.
All of this work is done with love and while we strive to serve as many people as possible, we still need the ongoing support of our community. It costs us $100 to see a single patient and we are counting on you to see our next patients to keep this clinic thriving.
