On February 3, 2016, President Barack Obama made a historic visit to the Islamic Society of Baltimore, marking his first presidential visit to a U.S. mosque. This visit took place because of the escalating attacks against Muslims and the need to ensure Muslims are seen and heard at the highest levels of government and to send the message that these attacks are abhorrent and unacceptable. His speech addressed growing Islamophobia, the contributions of Muslim Americans, and the importance of religious freedom in the United States.

During his remarks, President Obama honored the memory of Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha, and Razan Abu-Salha, recognizing their legacy of service, faith, and compassion. He spoke about their humanitarian work and the profound impact their tragic deaths had on the nation, reinforcing the need to build a more just and equitable society in which everyone can be safe.
