On February 10, 2015, Dr. Suzanne Barakat’s brother Deah, her sister-in-law Yusor and Yusor’s sister Razan were murdered in their home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Law enforcement and the media incorrectly labeled the crime a “parking dispute” based upon the word of the man who killed them. In the midst of heartbreak and trauma, Dr. Barakat was also forced to become an advocate and demand that the murders be called what they really were: hate crimes. As she reflects on how she and her family reclaimed control of their narrative, Dr. Barakat calls on us to speak up when we witness hateful bigotry and express our allyship with those who face discrimination.
